Heraldic Stole

This commission, a white Ordination stole, was designed to feature a strong ‘heraldic’ feel. There were quite a number of elements that the client wished to be included with a strong family or religious significance for him.

These were to be a lion (Judah), entwined in a passionflower, holding a pomegranate. A unicorn (the old symbol of the incarnate Christ) with a crown of thorned roses, standing on a bed of white lilies and an eagle carrying a grapevine. I was asked to base the eagle on an African Fish eagle, a connection to the clients time living in Africa and a dove carrying an olive branch.

This stole was worked in white Dupion silk with machine applique and some free machine embroidery. It was finished with hand couched 3ply twist thread for the plant stems.
