The client commissioning this stole is a former round the world sailor and wanted their stole to reflect their love of the sea and nautical tattoos but as they were too squeamish to have actual tattoos decided to have them on their stole instead! The symbols all have different meanings which they felt reflected their life ethos and beliefs. An anchor depicts holding fast and remaining grounded, the words Hold Fast, a rope that ties all things together, a nautical compass representing fulfilment in travel, swifts, each one representing 5,000 nautical miles travelled and a leather back turtle for strength and perseverance. The client wanted the colours to be shades of blue, representing how tattoos fade over time. Quite a challenge but I loved this one.
The stole was worked in blue silks on an ivory Dupion silk background, stitched with complementary colours.
