Kintsugi Cross

This commission was created for a returning customer whose Ordination stole I had made a couple of years ago. The theme was the Japanese art of Kintsugi, where broken items (usually china) are repaired using gold lacquer. It is a reminder to stay optimistic when things fall apart and to celebrate the flaws and missteps of life.

The stole is created using a two-tone purple Dupion silk with machine-appliqued elements. The areas of block gold are hand-couched 3ply twist threads. The thread is laid down in double strands and held in place with small couching stitches in a complementary colour.
