The brief for this commission was to reflect the two areas of this country that are very dear to the clients heart. Norfolk, where they were born and brought up and Northumberland where they currently live & are training for the Ministry. In particular the two cathedral cities of Norwich and Durham. The Norfolk side of the stole was to reference rural landscapes, with poppies, farmland, a barn owl and of course the ‘Norman Lady’ Norwich cathedral. In my final design I also included the stone gate of Castle Acre where the client is from. The Northumberland side was to reference mining, heather clad hills, an otter (St Cuthbert), a lapwing and the ‘Norman Lord’ Durham Cathedral. I am particularly pleased with the way the outline of the Cathedrals worked as the ‘skyline’.
This is an ivory silk Dupion stole with machine appliqued images, stitched in complementary colours. It is an example of my ‘scenic’ stoles.
