This commission came from a Methodist minister who didn’t usually use stoles in his ministry but had found that they were increasingly borrowing a purple stole when out visiting parishioners in their homes.
The brief was to include references to disability-their daughter was a wheelchair user, possibly the image of a primitive wheelchair as seen on the cover of a Frances Young book, the story of blind Bartimaeus, a cross of nails and crown of thorns were also to be included. They wanted it to convey that the disabled are often more insightful than the able bodied. I explored these ideas and thought that perhaps including some words in braille would make it more inclusive. The words Jesus son of David appear in braille on the banner.
This stole is worked in machine appliqued Dupion silks edged in gold metallic thread.
