The design symbol for this commission was new to me. It shows the Holy Spirit depicted as a wild goose. This is an ancient Celtic symbol where the Holy Spirit is not a dove but a wild goose. The meaning behind this is apparently the Celts saw how the Holy Spirit moves in an unexpected fashion, having a tendency to disrupt and surprise, similar to the actions of a wild goose. I loved the challenge of working out how the Celtic design interwove.
The stole was worked using gold and silver silks appliqued on to an ivory silk Dupion background. This is an example of a ‘symbol’ design.
