It all starts with a sketch

I was approached back in October about creating an altar & lectern fall for St Peter’s Church, Stratford-Upon-Avon, not something I’ve made before and an interesting new challenge, but where to start?

The church asked me to work up a design based on a theme of fish & the keys of St Peter.

These three sketches were the first I worked up, and although they were not perfect I especially liked the idea of trying to get the feel of looking up through a shoal of fish to the light on the sea surface & came up with the fourth design which the clients chose.

As with the Stole based on the ceiling of Bishop King Edwards Chapel, I began with my now tried and tested method of tracing the design & tacking it to the back of my layers of silk, this time in blues, teals and white. Then the fun part begins with the stitching & cutting.
