One of my favourite techniques is ‘reverse applique’. For this stole I have used it on some of the leaves I wanted to give an autumn feel to. I layered the three colours of silks one on top of the other, stitched the veins and outline with a tiny straight stitch.
Once the tracing paper was removed the areas I wanted to cut away were drawn on new tracing paper and the process repeated again. The outline of the leaf was then zig-zagged and cut out. With a small pair of curved point scissors I then cut through areas to reveal the colours below.
These leaves are now ready to be hand-stitched on to the stole.
